Miele dishwashers are famous for their longevity. The company designs these machines to last 20 years, a claim backed by their testing protocol. But reaching that 20-year mark requires proper maintenance. Here is what we have learned servicing Miele dishwashers across the Boston area.
The filter system is your first priority. Miele uses a sophisticated filtration system that must be cleaned regularly. Remove and rinse the filter weekly if you run the dishwasher daily. A clogged filter reduces cleaning performance and can damage the circulation pump over time.
Use rinse aid. This is not optional with Miele dishwashers. The rinse aid dispenser should always be filled. Rinse aid improves drying performance and prevents water spots, but more importantly, it helps water sheet off interior surfaces, preventing mineral buildup.
Run hot water at the sink before starting a cycle. Miele dishwashers can heat water, but starting with hot water means the first fill reaches cleaning temperature faster. This is especially important in homes with long runs from the water heater.
The spray arms need periodic inspection. Remove them and check that all spray holes are clear. Mineral deposits or food particles can block these small holes, reducing cleaning effectiveness. A toothpick works well for clearing blockages.
Clean the door seal and edges monthly. These areas do not get washed during the cycle and can accumulate residue and mold. Wipe down with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Pay attention to the bottom of the door where water can pool.
Run a maintenance cycle monthly using Miele's cleaning tablets or a cup of white vinegar. This removes grease and mineral deposits from internal components. An empty dishwasher on the hottest setting with the cleaning agent accomplishes this effectively.
Check the drain hose connection periodically. Ensure it maintains a high loop under the counter to prevent backflow from the sink drain. A drain hose that sags can allow dirty water back into the dishwasher.
If you notice any error codes, address them promptly. Miele's diagnostic system catches problems early. Ignoring error codes often leads to more extensive damage. Your owner's manual lists error codes, or our technicians can diagnose quickly.
