Understanding Your Luxury Refrigerator's Compressor

May 7, 20206 min readBrand Spotlight

The compressor is often called the heart of your refrigerator, and for good reason. This essential component circulates refrigerant through the system, enabling the cooling process that preserves your food. In luxury refrigerators like Sub-Zero, the compressor is engineered to exacting standards for decades of reliable service.

How does a compressor work? In simple terms, it compresses refrigerant gas, raising its temperature and pressure. This hot, high-pressure gas then flows to the condenser coils where it releases heat and becomes a liquid. The liquid refrigerant flows through an expansion valve into the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from inside the refrigerator and becomes a gas again, starting the cycle over.

Sub-Zero uses commercial-grade compressors in their residential units. This premium engineering is one reason these refrigerators deliver superior longevity. A typical household refrigerator compressor might run 10 to 15 years. Sub-Zero compressors frequently exceed 20 years with proper maintenance.

Signs of compressor trouble include the refrigerator running constantly without maintaining temperature, clicking sounds near the back of the unit, the compressor running hot to the touch, or the refrigerator not cooling at all while making a humming sound.

If you notice your compressor cycling on and off rapidly, this short cycling can indicate low refrigerant, a failing start relay, or compressor motor problems. Short cycling damages the compressor and should be addressed promptly.

Compressor replacement is one of the most significant repairs a refrigerator can need. However, in a luxury unit, this repair is often worthwhile. A new compressor essentially gives your refrigerator new life. Our technicians use genuine OEM compressors and back the repair with a comprehensive warranty.

Preventive care extends compressor life. Keep condenser coils clean, maintain proper temperature settings, ensure adequate ventilation around the unit, and address small problems before they stress the compressor. Your refrigerator's longevity depends largely on how well this vital component is maintained.
