Appliance emergencies create stress and urgency. Knowing what to do while waiting for professional help can minimize damage, protect your food, and sometimes even resolve the issue. Here is your emergency action guide.
Refrigerator not cooling: First, check if it is plugged in and the outlet has power. Check the temperature settings. If the unit is running but not cooling, do not open the door more than necessary. A closed refrigerator maintains safe temperatures for about 4 hours. Move highly perishable items to a cooler with ice.
Freezer failure: Keep the door closed. A full freezer stays frozen for about 48 hours if unopened. A half-full freezer lasts about 24 hours. If you have advance warning of the problem, group items together and cover with blankets for additional insulation.
Gas range will not light: Ensure the gas supply is on. Check if you smell gas. If you smell a strong gas odor, leave the house immediately and call your gas company from outside. Do not use matches or create sparks. If there is no gas smell, try the troubleshooting steps outlined in our gas range article.
Electric range not heating: Check the circuit breaker. Ranges typically require 240-volt circuits that can trip independently. If the breaker has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, do not reset it. This indicates an electrical problem that needs professional attention.
Dishwasher flooding: Turn off the dishwasher immediately using the cancel or stop button. If water is overflowing, turn off the water supply valve under the sink. Use towels to contain spreading water and protect flooring. Do not use the dishwasher until the problem is diagnosed.
Oven will not turn off: For electric ovens, turn off the circuit breaker. For gas ovens, turn off the gas supply valve. Open windows to release heat and contact us immediately as this is a safety concern.
Document the problem. Note any error codes, unusual sounds, or specific symptoms. Take photos if relevant. This information helps technicians diagnose more quickly and arrive with appropriate parts.
