Dishwasher Not Cleaning Well: Pre-Service Checks

Before You Call

Dishes coming out dirty? Check these common causes before calling for dishwasher repair.

When your dishwasher leaves dishes dirty, the problem is often something you can address yourself. Here are the most common causes and their solutions.

Start by checking and cleaning the filter. Most dishwashers have a filter at the bottom that traps food particles. A clogged filter restricts water flow and reduces cleaning performance. Remove it according to your owner's manual and rinse it clean.

Inspect the spray arms for clogs. Food particles or mineral deposits can block the small holes that spray water. Remove the spray arms and clear any blockages with a toothpick or small brush.

Verify that you are loading the dishwasher correctly. Dishes should face the center and not block the spray arms from spinning. Bowls and cups should face down. Do not overcrowd the racks.

Check the water temperature. Dishwashers need hot water, ideally 120 degrees Fahrenheit, to clean effectively. Run the hot water at your kitchen sink before starting the dishwasher to ensure it begins with hot water.

Use the right amount of detergent. Too little will not clean well, but too much creates residue. Follow the detergent manufacturer's recommendations for your water hardness level.

Examine the inlet valve for adequate water supply. If the dishwasher sounds different when filling or fills slowly, the inlet valve may need attention.

Run a cleaning cycle with dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar on the top rack. This removes grease and mineral buildup that affects performance.
