Ice Maker Not Producing Ice: Quick Checks

Before You Call

No ice? Here are the simple things to check before calling for ice maker repair.

Ice makers seem simple but have several components that must work together. Before calling for service, there are a few things you can check yourself.

First, verify that the ice maker is turned on. Many units have an arm that must be in the down position or a switch that must be in the on position. Consult your owner's manual for the specific location and operation.

Check that the freezer temperature is cold enough. Ice makers need the freezer to be at 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. If your freezer is too warm, ice production slows or stops entirely.

Verify the water supply. Locate the water shutoff valve, usually behind the refrigerator, and ensure it is fully open. A partially closed valve can restrict flow enough to prevent ice making.

Inspect the water filter if your refrigerator has one. A clogged filter restricts water flow to the ice maker. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the filter every six months.

Look for ice jams in the ice maker or the bin. Sometimes ice cubes fuse together or get stuck in the mechanism. Carefully remove any jammed ice without using sharp objects that could damage plastic components.

If the water inlet valve hums but you see no water entering, the valve may be failing. This requires professional replacement.

Give the ice maker time after any changes. It can take up to 24 hours to begin producing ice after a reset or adjustment.
