Oven Not Heating Properly: Basic Troubleshooting

Before You Call

When your oven is not reaching temperature or heating unevenly, try these checks first.

An oven that does not heat properly can ruin meals and create frustration. Before scheduling a service call, there are some basic checks you can perform.

First, verify the oven is receiving power. For electric ovens, check the circuit breaker. Electric ranges typically require a 240-volt circuit that can trip independently. For gas ovens, ensure the gas supply is on.

Check the oven temperature settings. Make sure the temperature you selected is actually the temperature you want. Also verify you are in the correct mode (bake, convection, broil) for what you are trying to cook.

Test the oven temperature with an oven thermometer. Place it in the center of the oven, preheat to 350 degrees, and check the reading after 20 minutes. Some variance is normal, but a difference of more than 25 degrees indicates a problem.

Inspect the heating elements for visible damage. Electric oven elements should glow evenly red when active. Dark spots or breaks indicate a failing element. For gas ovens, the burner flames should be blue with small yellow tips.

Make sure nothing is blocking heat circulation. Aluminum foil covering racks or large pans placed on the bottom can disrupt airflow and cause uneven heating.

Clean the oven if there is significant buildup. Grease and food residue can affect heating performance and even cause temperature sensors to read incorrectly.

If the oven light works but the oven does not heat, the issue may be with the igniter, heating element, or control board. These repairs require professional service.
