Why the island unit is the usual suspect
When a rear addition went in, the refrigeration often went with it: a full-height built-in on the wall and an undercounter unit or a drawer set in the island. Feeding the island meant running a supply line under a floor, sometimes a long way, sometimes through a shut-off that has not been touched since. Length, small-bore tubing, a partly closed valve and an old saddle connection all do the same thing — they drop the pressure at the inlet.
A fill cycle that does not deliver its full charge of water produces a thin, hollow, cloudy cube, or a mould that freezes what little arrived and then cannot release it. The complaint arrives as "the ice maker is broken". The module is often perfectly serviceable.

The cycle, in the order it is tested
- Pressure at the connection with the water actually running, not static
- Inlet valve operation and the state of the line and shut-off behind the cabinet
- Filter age — and whether the unit was ever purged properly after the last change
- A full cycle timed through fill, freeze and harvest, watched rather than inferred
- Module thermostat behaviour, and whether the harvest heater releases the cubes cleanly
- Bin sensor with the bin full and with it empty, which is what stops a working unit dead
Air in the line after a filter change is the single most common cause of a week of small cloudy cubes. It clears with a proper purge, and it needs nothing replaced.

When the module really has gone
There are genuine module failures: a harvest motor that stalls, a thermostat that never closes, a fill tube frozen solid because the heater has failed open. Those are diagnosed by watching a cycle rather than by swapping parts, and once identified the fix is a known quantity.

Knocking from the bin every time it dropped a batch. The auger bushing had worn right through. He replaced it and chipped out the ice welded to the back.

It kept switching itself off and wanting a reset about once a week. Instead of guessing he left a monitor on it and came back. A weak fill valve was tripping the cutout. Replaced, and no resets since April.
